The Stargazer 12-Inch Cast Iron Skillet is a premium, pre-seasoned frying pan made in the USA. What sets it apart from most cast iron is the smooth cooking surface — Stargazer machines the interior after casting so food releases cleanly from day one, without years of seasoning build-up. It handles grilling, searing, baking, and more, and the durable cast iron construction means this is a pan you buy once and pass down.

Our Review

Stargazer 12-Inch Cast Iron Skillet — Our Honest Review

Cast iron has a reputation problem: most people buy a cheap pan, struggle with food sticking for months, and give up before the seasoning ever builds properly. The Stargazer takes a different approach. After casting, they machine the cooking surface smooth — a step most cast iron manufacturers skip — and then apply their seasoning on top of that smooth base. The result is a pan that releases eggs, fish, and delicate proteins cleanly from the very first use, which is something a standard rough-surface cast iron simply cannot do without months of patient conditioning. The 12-inch size is the most practical for a household: large enough to sear six pork chops side by side, roast a whole spatchcocked chicken, or bake a skillet cornbread, yet the flared sides and helper handle make it manageable despite the weight of cast iron. The smooth surface excels at grilling and searing — get it properly hot and it holds that temperature through the entire cook, producing the crust on a steak or the crispy bottom on garlic fried rice that a thin non-stick pan cannot replicate. It is fully oven-safe with no temperature limit, so you can sear on the stovetop and finish in the oven without switching pans. Maintenance is simple: hot water, a stiff brush, two minutes on the stovetop to dry, a thin wipe of oil. The Stargazer costs more than a Lodge or a generic cast iron. It is worth it — and it will outlast everything else in your kitchen.

Who This Is For

The Stargazer is for the home cook who has already tried cheaper cast iron and been frustrated by sticking, or who simply wants to buy one pan and never replace it. It suits anyone who cooks proteins regularly — steak, pork chops, fish — and wants a proper sear. It is not the right choice if you want a lightweight everyday pan or if you rarely cook over high heat.

Pros & Cons

What We Love

  • Smooth cooking surface — pre-seasoned and ready to use from day one
  • Made in the USA — built to last a lifetime, not mass-produced
  • Versatile: excels at grilling, searing, baking, frying, and more
  • No temperature limit in the oven — no coatings, no plastic handles to worry about
  • Works on all cooktops including induction, gas, electric, and open flame
  • Seasoning deepens with every cook — gets better for decades

Worth Noting

  • Premium price — costs more than Lodge or generic cast iron
  • Heavy — the 12-inch is not a one-handed pan for most people
  • Hand wash only — dishwasher will strip the seasoning

Real-World Use Cases

How People Use the Stargazer 12-Inch Cast Iron Skillet

Searing proteins

The smooth surface and superior heat retention produce a crust on steak or pork that a non-stick pan physically cannot achieve. Get the pan hot for two minutes before adding the meat — no oil needed initially.

Sizzling table presentation

Cast iron holds heat long after it leaves the stove. Serve a sizzling dish directly in the Stargazer and it keeps cooking at the table for several minutes — the same dramatic effect you get at a high-end restaurant.

Oven finishing

Sear a thick steak on the stovetop for two minutes per side, then transfer the entire pan into a 220°C oven to finish. No temperature limit means no worry about damaging the pan.

Crispy fried rice

The sustained high heat produces the wok hei effect — the slightly smoky, charred quality — that a thin non-stick pan loses the moment cold rice hits it.

Cooked eggs on day one without sticking

I owned a Lodge for years and always struggled with sticking until the seasoning built up. The Stargazer was different from the first use — the smooth surface actually releases food. Fried eggs slid right off. I did not expect that from cast iron and it changed how I think about this type of pan.

The helper handle makes a real difference

Cast iron is heavy and I have burned myself moving pans in and out of the oven before. The Stargazer has a proper helper handle on the opposite side — small detail but it changes everything when you are pulling a hot pan from a 230°C oven. The flared sides also make it easier to flip food without a spatula catching on the rim. Thoughtful design.

Worth the price over cheaper cast iron

I almost bought a generic cast iron for a third of the price. Glad I did not. The machined surface is noticeably smoother and the seasoning has held up perfectly after months of daily use. My only note: it is heavy, so if you have wrist issues it takes adjustment. But the results — especially for searing pork — are genuinely better than anything I have cooked on before.

FAQ

Stargazer 12-Inch Cast Iron Skillet — Common Questions Answered

Does the Stargazer really not stick on the first use?

Yes — the machined smooth surface releases food far better than a standard rough cast iron out of the box. Eggs, fish, and pancakes slide cleanly from the first cook. The seasoning only improves from there.

Can I use it on an induction cooktop?

Yes. Cast iron is magnetic and works on all induction cooktops. The Stargazer has a flat base that makes full contact with induction surfaces.

How do I clean it without ruining the seasoning?

Hot water and a stiff brush while the pan is still warm. Dry it on the stovetop over low heat for two minutes, then wipe a thin layer of neutral oil over the surface. Never soak it or put it in the dishwasher.

Is the 12-inch size right for a household of two?

Yes — 12 inches is the most versatile size. Large enough to cook for four, manageable enough for daily use. If you cook primarily for one person, the 10-inch is lighter and easier to handle.
